5 Tips to Influence Your Safety Culture

Influencing safety culture can be time consuming and difficult, but a good safety culture is worth it!

In this blog I give a few tips you can start using to influence your safety culture for the better.

1. Focus on accountability

Accountability can look like having processes in place that keep your employees accountable and also don't make them feel like you are playing a big brother role.

The last thing you want to do is be the safety police. That will just make your employees hate safety!

Implementing a process or a software that does follow up for you is a good place to start.

2. Improve your engagement

Make sure you are talking to your employees about safety and they know that you care about them.

This can really only be accomplished with face to face interactions. The best and most effective way to engage with your employees is to talk with them.

Spend time with your employees and let them know you are focusing on safety because you care. Help them to understand that by enforcing safety and talking about safety with other employees they are showing other employees that they care.

3. Motivate your employees

Go out of your way to motivate your employees that are going above and beyond with safety.

Some companies give bonuses based on safety ratings, some have company a get together, meal, or days off if the employees or teams are going above and beyond.

The important thing is to think about what your employees want (time off, money, etc.). See how you can leverage that to motivate them to care more about safety.

4. Recognize your employees achievements

Don't just motivate employees to do well, but also make a point of recognizing them in front of their peers if they do perform well.

Make it prestigious to be safe in your company and let employees know that is something you are looking for all the time and it's something you will reward.

5. Make your job easier

This tip is really for the managers!

If you're stressed out, don't have time to engage and motivate employees, and don't have resources to propel your safety culture forward yourself-- it's not going to happen!

Safety culture comes from the top down and is measured at the floor level. So if you can't push it forward and you can't measure it, then it isn't going to happen.

Look for ways to save yourself time and save yourself resources.
